18 Jan Escapology
Escapology has long been the practice of escaping from restraints and other traps such as straitjackets, hand cuffs, coffins, barrels, steel boxes and more. Here are some of the best known escapologists in history. Dorothy Dietrich best known as the first and only woman to have performed the bullet catch in her mouth, and the first woman to perform a straitjacket escape while suspended hundreds of feet in the air from a burning rope. She was the first woman to break the glass ceiling for women in the field of escapes. Doug Henning, despite being Canadian, managed to gain prominence for performing the famous water torture escape on a live television special.
Newest on the scene has been Criss Angel with a series of amazing escapes that include straitjacket escapes, car crash escapes, and building implosion escapes. He may one day be the most memorable, but until then the award for the historical best still goes to the great Harry Houdini. Harry escaped handcuffs, a crate packed with nails, mail bags, riveted boilers, and even a barrel filled with beer. In 1973 he was the first to introduce the Chinese water torture where he would was suspended upside down into a water filled glass cabinet, requiring him to hold his breath for 3 minutes.
With iconic legends such as these to look up to is it any wonder that escape rooms sprang into existence giving the average Joe and Jane the opportunity to test themselves and seek their own glimmer of fame as they tackle one escape game after the next, trying to escape the room before failure can strike.
