Are escape rooms a new concept just recently born? As it turns out, the answer is no. The first escape room activity goes back about 10 years to a company in Kyoto, Japan called SCRAP. The concept solidified and eventually gained traction and began to really spread rapidly across Asia in 2012-2013. From there it went into Europe (with Hungary turning into a real Mecca for escape rooms) and just in the last couple years escape rooms have been springing up in Australia, Canada and now the Americas. The first known escape room in the United States was in San Francisco in 2012, but now escape rooms are proliferating across the states.

Escape rooms appear to be the evolution of a number of different precursor activities. Puzzle and treasure hunt activities have been around for years that involve players working in teams to solve a series of puzzles. Interactive theater and haunted house experiences have been growing in popularity over the past decade where participants shape a theater experience or in the case of haunted houses participants have to solve some puzzles to get out of the haunted house. More recently adventure game shows have contributed to the concept with shows like Survivor or The Amazing Race where contestants work together in teams to solve puzzles. These are just a few of the activities that have inspired the greatest new form of entertainment sweeping the globe. Come see for yourself why escape rooms are taking center stage.
