Fall is finally here, and with everyone heading back to school for the season, it won’t be too long before the holidays are upon us. But before you stock up on Halloween candy and mistletoe, don’t overlook one of the best holidays of the year. September 19 is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, the day when even the most stoic among us are free to cut loose with pirate speech, puns, and jokes all day long.

If you’re looking for a fun way to kick off the fall with your friends, family, or coworkers, how about celebrating Talk Like a Pirate Day in a pirate escape room? At Escape Frenzy in Minneapolis, our pirate adventure is the ideal setting for your pirate celebration. Read on to learn why an escape room pirate adventure needs to be on your calendar this September.

What is Talk Like a Pirate Day?

If you’ve never heard of this fantastic holiday, you might not be too surprised to learn it’s actually a fairly new one. The holiday was invented by two friends from Oregon, who celebrated it for years until one day, one of them decided to email Dave Barry. The idea caught on, and it’s been going strong for nearly two decades.

Since then, Talk Like a Pirate Day has taken on a life of its own as an excuse to dress up in pirate-themed attire and throw pirate-themed parties. It was even officially recognized as a holiday in Michigan.

How Do Pirates Talk?

When we talk like pirates, we’re really celebrating the Golden Age of piracy, which took place in the early part of the 18th century. This was the period when such notable pirates as Blackbeard and Black Bart Roberts ruled the high seas. Although we think of them as whimsical figures today, in their heyday, these historical figures were quite formidable and frightening.

Talk Like a Pirate Day is more recently inspired by the actor Robert Newton, who played a pirate in several famous pirate films using his own British West Country accent. Since then, the accent has become largely associated with the way pirates spoke and is the accent typically used by Talk Like a Pirate revelers.

Here are a few of our favorite pirate words and phrases for your escape room adventure:

●        Avast ye! - Pay attention!

●        Davy Jones’ Locker - The watery death that awaits ye at the bottom of the sea

●        Give No Quarter - Spare no lives

●        Parley - To have a diplomatic conference in an attempt to broker a compromise between two disputing parties

●        Shiver Me Timbers! - Expression of strong feelings

●        Weigh Anchor - Leave port and set sail

How to Dress Like a Pirate

If you want to go all out, you can even dress like a pirate. A pirate’s clothing was typically faded and patched up from years on the open sea. When we think of today’s stereotypical pirate, we’re typically thinking of pirates from the 18th century, and their attire would have been from that period. A loose-fitting blouse known as a poet blouse is the perfect shirt for a pirate party. Pirates wore breeches that were much shorter and tighter than men’s pants of today. You’ll also need a tricorn hat, as those were pretty standard for the period.

Here are a few more pirate touches you can add to your look:

●        A leather belt

●        A fake parrot

●        A sash around your waist

Visiting a Pirate Escape Room

One of the best ways to celebrate is by visiting our pirate-themed escape room at Escape Frenzy. In our Pirate’s Revenge escape room, you and your team will have one hour to solve your puzzles and complete the adventure. You’ll work together and look for clues to help you retrieve your treasure from a rival pirate. Of course, pirate attire is always an option!
