Whether you haven’t yet had the chance to check out an escape room, or you’re an old pro, escape rooms are a fun challenge for everyone. There’s nothing like gathering together with some of your favorite people and embarking on an adventure together.
But the thrill of the escape room is even more exciting if you have a strategy, which is why we’ve put together this helpful guide with some of our favorite tips. Next time you visit us at Escape Frenzy in Minneapolis, you can come armed with the skills and plan to take charge and lead all of your friends or family to victory!
1. Know What to Expect
Knowing what to expect when you embark on your next escape room challenge is half the battle. Put simply, an escape room is a room where you and some of your favorite people are placed in a room together, typically one with a theme like Pirate’s Revenge or The Search for Atlantis. You are given exactly one hour to solve a series of puzzles and locks and complete your mission.
An escape room adventure is a great night out that offers active entertainment and a chance to interact with each other instead of just staring at a screen or uploading Instagram pics of your dinner.
2. Don’t Overthink Things
Remember, an escape room is designed for the average person to complete in one hour. Most people tend to psych themselves out and get hung up on the idea that all of the puzzles are super complex, then when they finally have a big breakthrough, they kick themselves for how easy it was.
Remember that everything you need to solve your escape room is right there in the room. If you’re having trouble with an answer, move on to something else and then come back to it rather than beating your head against the wall.
3. Split Up and Look for Clues
Before you do anything else, everyone on your team needs to do their own independent search of the room. Be sure to look under tables, boxes, rugs, and anything else you can lift. If you see a book, look inside. Be sure to look behind doors and check pockets of any clothing you find.
Avoid getting sidetracked by things that aren’t actually clues—remember, if it’s a clue or important artifact, it will fit with the theme of the room. Group your clues together so you can try to get a sense of the bigger picture, and once you’ve used a clue, place it aside out of the way so it doesn’t distract you.
